I arrived in London at last. The railway station was big, black and dark. I did not know the way to my ho, so I asked a porter. I not only spoke English very carefully, but very clearly as well. The porter, howr, could not understand me. I repeated my question sral times and at last he understood. He answered me, but he spoke neither slowly nor clearly. 'I am a foreigner,' I said. Then he spoke slowly, but I could not understand him. My teacher nr spoke English like that! The porter and I looked at each otherand iled. Then he said soming and I understood it. 'You'll soon learn English!' he said. I wonder. In England, each person speaks a different language. The English understand each other, but I don't understand them! Do they speak English?

语言点1 问、说、回答等动词的用法：

answer . sth. 回答某人……

What shall I answer?

我将怎么回答呢？

ask . 问某人

I asked her the time but she ge no answer.

我问她时间，可是她没回答。

l .告诉某人

Tell him from me that he must be at the meeting on time.

请转告他，叫他务必按时到会。

say to .对某人说

We shall see his boat and then we shall say goodbye to him.

我们将参观他的船，然后与他告别。

reply to / sth.对……作出答复、反应

A lot of people replied to our aertisement.

有许多人对我们的广告作出了反应。

6 ) respond to . / sth.对……作出反应

She responded to my letter with a phone call.

她收到我的信，给我回了个电话。

着重对比：answer，reply, respond均含有“回答”的意思。

1) answer是常用词，可指口头、笔头，甚至可表示以行动回答；

2) reply 较 answer正式；

3) respond是正式用语，指对、职责、请求等作出自发的适当反应。

语言点2 neither... nor...意为“既不……也不……”此结构不仅可以连接副词还可连接其他词：

I can neither sing nor dance.

我既不会唱歌也不会跳舞。

She speaks neither Chinese nor English.

她既不会说中文也不会说英语。

My brother is standing beside the door neither in nor out.

我弟弟站在门口，既不进来也不出去。

8. ‘I am a foreigner, ’I said.

“我是外国人，”我说。

语言点 在国外如果听不懂对方的话可要求他讲慢一点，并说“I’m a foreigner.”。在国内如果听不懂方言则不妨说“I’m a stranger here.(我不是本地人)”。

语言点 对比学习：understand, comprehend, know都有“知道，明白，“理解”的意思。

understand 是常用词，强调完全了解

People who speak the same language can easily understand one another.

说同一种语言的人能够很容易彼此了解。

comprehend 侧重了解的过程

He comprehends mathematics.

他数学学得好。

know 强调了解其中一部分的含义

She knows more about America than anyone else I know.

她比我认识的其他任何人对美国的了解都多。

'The play may begin at any moment,' I said.

'It may he begun already,' Susan answered.

I hurried to the ticket off. 'May I he two tickets please?' I asked.

'I'm sorry, we've sold out,' the girl said.

'What a pity!' Susan exclaimed.

Just then, a man hurried to the ticket off.

'Can I return these two tickets?' he asked.

'Certainly,' the girl said.

I went back to the ticket off at once.

'Could I he those two tickets please?' I asked.

'Certainly,' the girl said, 'but they're for next Wednesday's performance. Do you still want them?'

'I might as well he them,' I said sadly.

Lesson 20 One man in a boat独坐孤舟

Fishing is my fourite sport. I often fish for hours without catching anything. But this does not worry me. Some fishermen are unlucky. Instead of catching fish, they catch old boots and rubbish. I am n less lucky. I nr catch anything -- not n old boots. After hing spent whole mornings on the river, I always go home with an empty bag. 'You must give up fishing!' my friends say. 'It's a waste of time.' But they don't realize one important thing. I'm not really interested in fishing. I am only interested in sitting in a boat and doing nothing at all!

Lesson 21 Mad or not? 是不是疯了

Aeroplanes are slowly driving me mad. I live near an airport and passing planes can be heard night and day. The airport was built years ago, but for some reason it could not be used then. Last year, howr, it came into use. Over a dred people must he been driven away from their homes by the noise. I am one of the few people left. Sometimes I think this house will be knocked down by a passing plane. I he been offered a large sum of money to go away, but I am determined to stay here. Everybody says I must be mad and they are probably right.

Last year, we were trelling across the Channel and Jane put a piece of with her name and address on it into a bottle. She threw the bottle into the sea. She nr thought of it again, but ten months later, she received a letter from a girl in Holland. Both girls write to each other regularly now. Howr, they he decided to use the t off. Letters will cost a little more, but they will certainly trel faster.

Lesson 23 A new house新居

I had a letter from my sister yesterday. She lives in Nigeria. In her letter, she said that she would come to England next year. If she comes, she will get a surprise. We are now living in a beautiful new house in the country. Work on it had begun before my sister left. The house was completed five months ago. In my letter, I told her that she could stay with us. The house has many large rooms and there is a lovely garden. It is a very modern house, so it looks strange to some people. It must be the only modern house in the district.

I entered the ho mar's off and sat down. I had just lost $50 and I felt very upset. 'I left the money in my room,' I said, 'and it's not there now.' The mar was sympathetic, but he could do nothing. 'Everyone's losing money these days,' he said. He started to complain about this wicked world but was interrupted by a knock at the door. A girl came in and put an envelope on his desk. It contained $50. 'I found this outside this gentleman's room,' she said. 'Well,' I said to the mar, 'there is still some honesty in this world!'

1.Do the English speak English? (标题)英国人讲的是英语吗?

English在这里均为名词，但意义不同。第1个指“英国人”，为总称，后面的动词必须用复数;第2个指“英语”。指语言时前面不加冠词，指人则要加the：

The English often talk about the weather.

英国人经常谈论天气。

Do you speak English?

你会讲英语吗?

English还可以作形容词，表示“英格兰的”、“英国的”、“英国人的”等：

He was English.

他是个英国人。

与English相似的单词有French，Chinese，Japanese等：

I said good morning to him in French.

我用法语向他问早上好。

2.I arrived in London at last. 我终于到了伦敦。

(1)这里London前面不加冠词，介词in暗指London是个大地方。

(2)at last为固定短语，表示“终于”，一般暗指经过一番等待、麻烦(苦恼)或努力之后：

It was my turn at last.

终于轮到我了。

I repeated my question sral times and at last he understood.

我把问话重复了很多遍。他终于听懂了。

3.I did not know the way to my ho…我不知道去饭店的路该怎么走……

my ho不是指属于我的饭店(或旅馆)，而是指我已订了房间或者要去住的饭店。

4.I not only spoke English very carefully, but very clearly as well.

我的英语讲得不但非常认真，而且咬字也非常清楚。

not only…but…as well这组连接词与 not only…but also是同样的意思，都表示“不但……而且……”，not only与 but后面的成分必须对等。课文中的这句话可以改为：

I spoke English not only very carefully, but very clearly as well.(意义不变)

Mary not only found her aunt, but stayed with her for two weeks as well.

玛丽不仅找到了她姑妈，而且还在她那里住了两星期。

(连接整个谓语)

as well这个短语本身的含义是“也”、“又”、“还”：

If you go home tomorrow, I'll go as well.

如果你明天回家，我也回。

He lent me his pen, and his dictionary as well.

他把钢笔借给了我，还有字典。

5.… he spoke neither slowly nor clearly.……他讲得既不慢也不清楚。

否定连词 neither…nor…(既不……也不……)连接的成分必须对等：

Neither the boss nor his secretary is flying to New York.

老板和他的秘书都没有飞往纽约。(连接两个主语)

I met neither Jane nor her huand.

简和她的丈夫我都没见到。(连接两个宾语)

6.My teacher nr spoke English like that! 我的老师从来不那样讲英语!

like 在这里是介词，表示“像”、“像……一样”：

There's no one like you.

没有人像你一样。

He speaks like a foreigner.

他说话像外国人。

1.They always l you what a picture is‘about’.(他们)总是告诉你一张画的“意思”是什么。

This is a book about Australia.

这是一本关于澳大利亚的书。

They are talking about modern art.

他们在谈论现代艺术。

课文中这句话可以直译为：他们总是告诉你某一幅画是“关于”什么的，也就是一幅画的“意思”是什么。about放在引号里，一是指这些人谈论画的时候经常用到这个词，二是表示一种讽刺，因为有些画没有任何“意思”。

2.They are just pretty patterns.它们就是些好看的图案。

just在此处指“只是”、“仅仅(是)”，而不是指“刚才”、“正好”、“正是：

It was just a wrong number.

这只是一个错误的号码。(即只不过是拨错了号码)

正好6点。

3.We like them in the same way that we like pretty curtain material. 我们喜爱它们就像我们喜爱漂亮的窗帘布一样。

in the same way that/as是个连接短语，用于表示比较，可译为“像/和……一样”：

She walks in the same way that/as her sister did.

她的走路姿势和以前走路的姿势一模一样。

4.I think that young children often appreciate modern pictures better than anyone else. 我觉得小孩子们往往比任何人都更能欣赏现代绘画。

else经常与不定代词连用(如ryone else，someone else，anything else等)，表示“另外/加”、“其它/他的”或“不同的”：

你还可以找到其他人吗?

5.…she always ls me wher my pictures are good or not.

……她总能说出我的画是好还是坏。

连接词 wher…or not可以表示选择：

I don't know wher you are interested (in it) or not.

我不知道你(对它)是否感兴趣。

You must him, wher you like him or not.

不管你是否喜欢他，你(都)必须帮助他。

6.She looked at it critically for a moment. 她用挑剔的目光看了一会儿。

for a moment为固定短语，表示“片刻”、“一会儿”：

They looked at each other for a moment.

他们互相对视了一会儿。

7.It's all right. 还可以吧。

all right为固定短语，在这里表示“令人满意的”、“不错的”：

The performance of the Greenwood Boys at the Workers' Club was all right.

“绿林少年”演唱团在工人俱乐部的那场演出还不错。

all right还可以表达许多其他意思，如表示同意等。

1.…the boys put up their tent in the middle of a field.……孩子们在田野搭起了帐篷。

in the middle of表示“在……当中”、“在……中间”，既可以用于表示地理位置，又可以用于表示时间或在某个过程当中：

Mary was in the middle of reading when her aunt arrived.

in the centre of(在……中部/)则一般用于表示地理位置：
