什么是重读闭音节?我们说以一个或几个辅音字母结尾的．中间只有一个元音的称之为闭音节.重读闭音节即该闭音节处在重读音节上.如：begin,这个单词是双音节单词,音标是[bi’gin],第二个音节就是重读闭音节.

在初中英语教科书中,有多处谈到了以重读闭音节结尾的单词要双写一个辅音字母这一说法,但什么是重读闭音节课本上并没有详细的解说,致使学生在使用这一规则的时候概念模糊,容易出错.在我们正使用的初中英语课本中要用到了重读闭音节的几条规则是：A.在动词变现在分词时,（以一个辅音字母结尾的重读闭音节,要双写一个辅音字母再加－ing.） B.在动词变过去式．过去分词时,（以一个辅音字母结尾的重读闭音节,要双写一个辅音字母再加－ed.）C.在形容词．副词变比较级和时,（以一个辅音字母结尾的重读闭音节,要双写一个辅音字母再加－er．－est.）这些规则都是初中学生必须掌握的重要语法知识.可见,重读闭音节在初中英语教学中具有何等重要的地位.

尽管这些规则在教科书中都叙述得非常清楚,明了,但在实际运用中,学生往往还是不易掌握,搞不清楚重读闭音节的意思.只记得是以一个辅音字母结尾的单词,所以经常在运用的时候出错.根据多年的教学实践,我认为把重读闭音节这一说法具体化一点更能使学生理解和掌握.

具体化的方法是把“以一个辅音字母结尾的重读闭节”这句话分解为四个条件,八个字,即：“一元．一辅．又重．又短”.那么这八个字是什么意思呢?“一元．一辅”就是指单词是以一个元音加一个辅音结尾,“又重”是指该单词的一个元音所处的音节是重读音节,“又短”则指该单词的一个元音也就是重读音节上的元音必须发短音.凡是符合这四个条件的我们就必须双写一个辅音字母.我们还是以begin一词为例,它是以一个元音“i”和一个辅音“n”结尾,那么就符合了“一元．一辅”这两个条件.元音字母“i”所处的音节是重读音节符合“又重”的条件.元音字母“i”发短音[i]符合“又短”的条件.即四个条件全部符合,所以它在变现在分词时要双写一个辅音字母“n”再加－ing,即begin－beginning.再如形容词slow,它也是以一个元音“o”和一个辅音“w”结尾,并且是单音节单词也属于重读音节,但元音字母“o”与辅音字母“w”一起发双元音[ou],不是发的短音,所以它在变比较级和的时候都不能双写的辅音字母,只能直接加－er,－est.即变为：slower,slowest.

但在使用这八字口诀的时候还要注意两点,一.以“x”结尾的单词要除外,如：fix,它也是符合上述四个条件的单词,但它的过去式,过去分词,及现在分词都不能双写,只能把它当作一般情况对待,即现在分词是：fixing,过去式和过去分词是：fixed.二.trel也是一个例外,它不是重读闭音节单词,但在变化时也要双写.它的现在分词是:trelling,过去式和过去分词是:trelled.

综上所述,凡是符合“一元．一辅．又重．又短”这四个条件的单词在变现在分词．过去式．过去分词．比较级．时要双写一个辅音字母再加相应的后缀,以“x”结尾的单词及trel要除外.
